Spicing Up Bollywood: My Bollywood Chutney Mix
September 2024 was an exciting time for my DJ career. I had the opportunity to showcase my creativity in a whole new way with a new Bollywood-Chutney mix. As an open-format DJ who specializes in blending sounds, I’ve always been fascinated by the vibrant and exotic music of Bollywood. I wanted to add my special twist to it, which is where I thought Chutney music could fit in nicely.
The Inspirationš”for this Mix
The idea for the Bollywood Chutney mix came to me as I was spinning Bollywood tracks for the upcoming September 2024 mix. The original plan was to do a long-form mix playing each genre separately from the other. After recording the rehearsal audio, the mix sounded to me like every other Bollywood mix I had ever listened to. As a DJ, the goal is to stand out, not to blend in. It was during that moment of frustration when my fiancĆ© offered the suggestion to do a ācall and responseā technique, in other words mixing back and forth between the two genres. Her idea was invaluable! The result is the mix that you can listen to on Mixcloud.
Highlighting the Mix On the ‘Gram
For Diwali 2024, my fiancƩ and I created a special series of Instagram video content that showcased the Bollywood Chutney sound. These short, colorful clips (like the one above) allowed me to share the mix with an even wider audience and get more people excited about the fusion of these two beloved musical styles.
